How Getting a Dog Changed My Mental Health
A personal reflection on how unconditional love, routine, and companionship can regulate the nervous system and restore emotional balance.
Getting a dog truly saved my life.
There was a period in my life when I felt emotionally overwhelmed. Between work, school, and completing clinical hours, my energy was constantly being pulled in different directions. I cared deeply about people, but I felt so depleted that building deep, meaningful connections felt nearly impossible.
I didn’t realize how much I needed unconditional love until I experienced it.
Getting a dog was actually my fiancé’s idea. At the time, I wasn’t sure we would follow through with it. Life felt busy, and I didn’t know if we were ready. But one day after work, we went home and then headed out together to pick up our dog. The entire process felt surprisingly smooth, as if it was meant to happen.
That’s when Gigi became part of my life.
